WHAT TO KNOW ON INDEPENDENCE DAY

Every day should be treated like the 4th of July, so you really can't get on my case for being ten days late to writing about it (due to a technical problem).
Forget about that; for now, try to imagine back in July of 1776, when the Americans had beaten the British and were then focused on explaining their actions by writing their formal declaration of independence. This set off a chain of events, which ultimately led to the formation of a democratic-republic and the writing of the American Constitution. A new nation was established, and we were on the road to prosperity.
And look at today, with Obama's belief that the Constitution is a "flawed document." He swears to defend the constitution, and then goes bashing it. Really patriotic president. But it's not just him; take a look at this disclaimer from a textbook telling people not to be offended by the contents of the written constitution within.
Ridiculous. If this isn't what today's constitutional values would be written as, what is?

  1. Instead of going deep into explanation about this, I'm just gonna go and say "Freedom of Speech."

Also, about the textbook, did you ever consider the date? People back then had different views on Ethnicity, Religion, Slavery, etc. that would have been different than views we hold today.

P.S. - We hadn't 'beaten' the British in 1776. That's when we declared Independence in one region of the American Colonies. We had signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

  2. Apparently I need an even more articulate explanation of my beliefs, so here it is:
President Obama can say whatever he wants about the constitution, since, yes, he has freedom of speech, but why would we want a president that has anti-constitutional beliefs? If he swore to uphold the constitution and then says it's flawed, that kind of makes him a liar. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have freedom of speech, I’m just saying that what he said was crazy, and I’m questioning why anybody would want someone leading their country who thinks the foundation of their country is flawed.
The people who wrote that disclaimer are assuming that parents will be offended by the constitution because it was in a time of racism and religious prejudice, and the children must not be exposed to it or they will be “corrupted”! It’s like being ashamed to be an American—being afraid to say what our beliefs are, fearing that they aren’t politically correct. Why shouldn’t we be proud to proclaim our constitution? Sure, there were some things that were morally wrong written in the document, but we fixed those with amendments. We don’t have to say ideas about these concepts have changed, much less insert disclaimers into children’s textbooks!
